Trafford MV made the long journey to north Cumbria expecting a tough afternoon as a spate on injuries and absentees saw a weakened team making the journey.
Ideal conditions made the afternoon perfect for rugby. within the fist quarter of an hour MV had been on the rails by a very good Wigton side. Moffatt opened the scoring with Reed converting and further tries coming for Harris, Lewis and Henderson to secure the Bonus point at 22-0 with as many minutes gone! It was all looking ominous for MV. The home side had the option of several big ball carriers and in roads were being made in the MV defence all over the park.
The MV players worked hard to stall the attacks but it proved pointless. further tries came from Moffatt, Henderson, converted and Dean to reach 39-0 at half time. MV made changes in the second half and began to manage the game a bit better but the damage had already been done.
Second half tries came for Wigton from Armstrong, converted by Reed and then Lewis before MV’s stand out player Stuart Crampton eventually crossed the line for MV for a consolation score. As the minutes ticked away Harris crossed for Wigton’s tenth and final try for a comfortable 58-5 win.
MV can be proud of the effort put in by the players on the day but strength in depth is an obvious point to work on for next season.
This weekend brings MV’s final game of the season at home against 2nd placed Bolton who have won their last 6 games. MV will be nearer full strength and will be looking for a win to close off their season.
Local rugby support is invited to come and watch the last game and get behind the team – kick off is 3.00pm
