Trafford MV Sports Club entered a new era last weekend as they put a Womens XV into a competitive game for the first time in 97 years.
Fitting in nicely with International Women’s Day the team welcomed Oldham Ladies to MacPherson Park in Sale and showed their merit right from the start.
Having been launched only six weeks ago MV have had good training numbers however had no idea how they would gel on the pitch. Those fears were soon cast aside as playing patterns soon emerged and a good strong forward display brought plentiful possession for the backs to play.
MV opened the scoring with a determined solo effort from Anna Maseko who broke the defence and kept running strongly to touchdown, Maddie Woodworth converted.
Oldham replied quickly as the ball was moved wide for the talented full back to take the ball at pace and outflank MV’s defence, converted to level scores.
Both teams were looking good and Amelia Kelly struck for MV with Rachel Massey narrowly missing the conversion 12-7. Success came MV’s way again as Olivia Thompson rounded off some good interplay with the conversion again being missed, this time by Katie Wood, 17-7 to Trafford MV. MV’s director of women’s rugby Lizzi Cafferkey was next on the scoresheet again no conversion as MV searched for the golden boot.
Oldham were never out of the game and both teams were playing good rugby and Oldham struck back with a converted try 22-14.
It was early in the second half that MV shined like stars as play maker Maddie Woodworth struck twice early on both unconverted to open up a 32-14 gap. with it looking to be in the bag for MV it became evident that Oldham were no quitters as they hit back with a couple of converted tries of their own 32-24.
In the latter stages of the game it came down to impressive Rachel Massey to make the difference as her pace and evasive running brought her two touchdowns one of which she converted herself off the crossbar.
Trafford MV can be proud of the players on the field – plus the many that did not get on the field in this game. This was a great advert for the women’s game as a good supportive crowd came to watch.
Trafford MV have another fixture lined up against Moore Ladies on March 15th away from home.
In addition to the Women’s team the Club are looking to attract young girls aged 11-16 years to join us for Monday evening training from March 16th between 7-8pm and on Sunday mornings from 10.30am at M33 6LR. For any info please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Trafford MV 1st XV put in a good effort against Oldham 1st XV but went down 26-33 vs Oldham, the 2nd XV won 28-39 away at Fleetwood and the 3rd XV won at home against Oldham 58-0 all in all not a bad day for Rugby at Trafford MV.
