Police got calls from concerned members of the public about a man that was seen struggling in the water at Salford Quays at around 4.40pm today 18 July 2021.

All emergency services turned up including specialist police divers to rescue the man, who according to many people on social media had jumped in to save his dog

Police divers located him and recovered the body at around 7.40pm and after many attempts to bring the man around he was sadly pronounced dead.

We are also hearing that some people were seen jumping in the same bit of water during the day although no one got into any difficulties on that occasion, we suggest not to be doing anything like this as you do not know how deep the water is, guessing is not good enough.

An investigation is now underway to the exact cause of his death and the file has been passed to the coroner.

Detective Inspector Helen Bagnall, of GMP’s Trafford district, said: “Firstly our thoughts are with this young man’s family and friends, and the people who witnessed the tragic events.”Sadly, this proves how dangerous going into unfamiliar water can be, especially when you can’t see below the surface of what could be very cold water.”
