Police closed off roads around Brooklands Metrolink Station last night (9 June 2024) after they got reports of a someone finding a grenade in the Bridgewater Canal in Sale.

Magnet fishers called police after finding the explosive.

The Ordinance Explosive Ordinance Disposal team arrived later on last night and according to an officer said it was from WW1 (World War One) which is one heck of a find.

The Grenade (Rifle grenade N°3 MkI) is a British Grenade and was used in 1915 and apparently was an aerodynamic upgrade to the previous one, the one found in the canal had a missing long rod type tube and coils.

It was a high explosive and was used throughout World War One by the British Military.

Most bombs found in the Bridgewater Canal are from WW2 and dropped by the German Luftwaffe during the blitz and we expect many more to be found by Magnet Fishers.
