Police arrest a man and is in custody after he attacked a woman from behind in Whalley Range.

Shortly before 10am on Dec 14  police were called to Mayfield Road to reports of an assault.

The victim, a woman in her 30’s, was walking along the road near to the Hare Krishna Centre when she was attacked by a man from behind.

She was taken to hospital for knife wounds to her head and face, as well as a fractured skull and bleed to the brain.

Her injuries, although serious, are fortunately not life-threatening.

Detectives investigating the attack have now arrested a man in connection with the incident.

Detective Inspector Mark Astbury, of GMP’s City Centre team, said: “A 32-year-old man is currently in custody after being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

“The investigation will continue and I would still urge anyone with any information about the attack to please call police.

“We are also keen to speak to two white men, both thought to be in their 50s, who and dropped a man with an arm injury off in a silver saloon to Manchester Royal Infirmary on Wednesday morning.

 “The victim is still recovering from her injuries in hospital and specially trained officers continue to offer their support.”
