A pump, bell and puncture outfit is what most cyclists bring with them on a ride with a drink in the cage, if the government get their way cyclists will need to also have a licence.
The idea is gaining ground amongst other political people It will be hard for a cyclist to show a licence number, of course you cannot have a licence plate on a bike! so one idea is to have cyclists wear a bib with the number on the back.
Other ideas presented by Tory MP Grant Shapps is to make it an offence for cyclists to go over the speed limit of a road, for example in a 20MPH zone, some road bikes can get to 25MPH easily, and of course electric bikes can go way beyond this speed.
Cycists caught going over the speed limit would be hit hard although no one would be sent to prison for any offence.
We think this is the most bonkers idea this useless and criminal government has ever looked at, we need to increase people getting on bikes not decrease it, no one would buy a licence! it is already doomed to failure, it is a crazy idea.
To enforce cyclists going over 20MPH will be hard, for example if all them APNR cameras that have gone up above the Clean Air Zone APNR cameras catch cyclists would it be unfair if say a cyclist on a road bike is doing 18MPH in an easterly direction and is brought over 20MPH due to the wind? what about if a cyclist is next to a bus, or behind one, or behind a large van or HGV.
So what would be the charge for that? Aerodynamicly going over the speed limit? this is why its utter rubbish the entire idea, some cyclists more so the road guys and gals won’t wear a bib more so in the hot weather, another reason why a bib idea is a bad one.
If you want to catch cyclists as well as motorists going through red we suggest getting APNR cameras at big junctions, then it would be up to the council to impose fines for all.
Cycling must never be tampered with just to make more profits! that is what it really is all about, making money out of anything, the government is crazy and it would be for the opposition to stop the rot, sadly Starmer is still on the fence in an almost Frank Spencer type of way.
If the stupid idea becomes something we shall with all cyclists oppose this madness for the future of cycling in this country because it becomes law, cycling in the UK is dead.
