Trafford residents and community groups in the borough will gather during ‘Challenge Poverty Week’ which takes place between (17–23 October) to address the issues that cause poverty in the borough and to set out potential solutions.

Groups taking part include Citizens Advice, Groundwork, Mile Shy Club, NHS Greater Manchester,
The Bread and Butter Thing, Trafford Age UK, Trafford College, Trafford Community Hubs, Trafford
Council, Trafford Housing Trust and Your Housing Group.

They will discuss their own work and the main causes of poverty in their communities – with a
particular focus on the growing cost of living crisis and what they’re doing to address it.

Trafford Council Leader, Cllr Andrew Western, said: “The cost of living crisis is extremely challenging
for residents across Trafford and we must do everything we can to limit the impact on them.

“Challenge Poverty Week England highlights the issue and shows what a problem this is proving to
be both in our borough and across the UK. Trafford Council has made supporting people out of
poverty a top priority and we are working closely with partners to help provide help and support to
residents who find themselves struggling.”

Zoe Taylor, Communities Manager at Trafford Housing Trust, said: “It’s a priority to us to ensure we
are supporting our customers through what we know are very difficult times. This week is an
opportunity to partner with organisations across Trafford and reach out to customers who are
needing advice or guidance on how to tackle the winter challenges. It’s important to us that our
customers can access the right support when they need it and that we can support them to live
better lives.”

Gavin Aitchison, from the national Challenge Poverty Week coordinating team, said: “All of us want
to live with dignity – to be treated as fully human, to have choices and be able to participate in our
community. But this winter, the soaring cost of living will deny that dignity to millions of people.
People will be forced to choose between heating or eating… to skip meals so their children can eat…
to go cold and hungry in one of the world’s richest countries.

“Challenge Poverty Week is a time for people and communities facing poverty to stand up with
dignity, share experiences, and speak out for just solutions to the cost of living crisis.”
