Robbie Coltrane who’s real name was Antony Robert McMillan has sadly died aged 72.

Coltrane starred in Harry Potter and James Bond films Golden Eye and The world is not enough, he appeared in many other films, his career started with a TV series alongside Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson called ‘Alfresco’ in 1983 and in 1987 he starred alongside Emma Thompson in a BBC mini series called Tutti-Frutti.

His career as an actor started to take shape playing Dr Eddie Fitzgerald in ITV’s Cracker series which ran from 1993-2006.

Robbie gained many honours in his career, in 2006 he got an OBE in the New Years Honours, in 1990 he got the Evening Standard British Film award, He was awarded ‘Outstanding contribution’ from ‘British Academy Scotland awards’ and many more awards.

Stephen Fry paid tribute to Coltrane saying “I first met Robbie Coltrane almost exactly 40-years-ago, I was awe/terror/love struck all at the same time. Such depth, power and talent: funny enough to cause helpless hiccups and honking as we made our first TV show ‘Alfresco’ Farewell, Old fellow. You will be dreadfully missed”

He married Rhona Gemmell in 1999 and had two children Spencer and Alice, he and Rhona divorced in 2003, it is claimed he suffered with arthritis.

Robbie Coltrane died in hospital on 14 October 2022.
