Trafford MV travelled into the heart of Lancashire in search of important League points and with exceptional mild conditions prevailing the expectation of a good game was high.
MV were keen to make a good start and after early exchanges from both sides it was the visiting side that grabbed the early initiative when Micah Dyos continued his scoring run by driving out of close contact play close to the Ormskirk try line to touch down and give MV the opening try, the conversion was missed by Aaron Booth 0-5.
Trafford MV were soon back on the attack as good ball was won , as they attacked down the left wing a loose pass went to ground and was picked up by the home side winger who stepped his was through the immediate defense to race away and score wide to the right, this conversion was also missed 5-5.
Play was very even with MV showing a threat from their forward pack whilst Ormskirk were showing more threat from their wide players. This threat paid dividends when an attack down the left flank by Ormskirk saw their winger kick ahead and chase after the ball , picling up and racing in to score the to left of the posts, the try was converted 5-12.
It was not long before Trafford responded as good forward driving play saw Andy Quigley, having his best game of the season to date, drive his way over the line. Aaron Booth added the conversion points to level the score at 12-12.
The home side were keen on playing quick tap penalties and a succession of driving rucks had MV defending their own line under pressure. A couple of short drives were followed by an outrageous dummy from the scrum half who sniped over.
The conversion attempt was screwed wide of the uprights 17-12. As half time approached Trafford MV were again pressing through their pack and this time it was captain Paul Davenport who got the final touchdown as the forwards ploughed over the Ormskirk try line. Aaron Booth converted again for MV to take a 17-19 lead into the half time break.
The second half was to follow the end to end sequence of the first period with both sides having good passages of play and both sides making erros and giving advantage away in several instances. Ormskirk were first to regain the lead as they atatcked wide down the left wing and good handling and pace left MV floundering.
The resulting try went unconverted 22-19 to Ormskirk. The pressure continued to ebb and flow and MVs No 8 Kieran Edgar ran his weight from 15 yards out to break through defending tackles and force his way across the line, Booth converted 22-26 to Trafford MV.
It was now telling that MV needed to manage the game out with only a couple of minutes left to play. MV conceded a penalty which brought Ormskirk to within just a single point at 25-26. Trafford MV were much relieved when they heard the final whistle blow. The result had never been in doubt !!!!
Andy Quigley and Aaron Booth both had very good games for MV but the Player of the Match went to Kieran Edgar who was influential in both attack and defence and collected a try in the process. There is no fixture next week for Trafford MV which gives players a chance to rest knocks but does not allow the team to build on this narrow but crucial win.
MV are calling out to all local Rugby players that have drifted out of the game since Covid to come to the Club and get back into playing regular Rugby for our grassroots, Community Rugby Club. Contact wilfdooley@virginmedia.com for info
