Brixton born Maxi Jazz lead singer of dance group Faithless has died aged 65
The singer and DJ whose real name is Maxwell Fraser was the lead singer of the dance group Faithless who had huge success with songs like ‘Insomnia’ and ‘God is a DJ’
Faithless was formed after Maxi Jazz met Rowland Armstrong who made remixes for Pet Shop Boys and Simply Red, Fraser came up with the stage name ‘Maxi Jazz’ and he went on to the big time after a long stint in the DJ world which included a couple of big names in the radio world back in the 1980’s.
Outside of music he was a Buddhist, he loved cars and life.
On Faithless Instagram a statement was issued about his death: “We are heartbroken to say Maxi Jazz died peacefully in his sleep last night.
“He was a man who changed our lives in so many ways. He gave proper meaning and a message to our music. He was also a lovely human being with time for everyone and a wisdom that was both profound and accessible.
“It was an honour and, of course, a true pleasure to work with him. He was a brilliant lyricist, DJ, Buddhist, a magnificent stage presence, car lover, endless talker, beautiful person, moral compass and genius. Rest in peace dearest Max. 1957 – 2022.”
Maxi Jazz (Maxwell Fraser) died peacefully at his London home on 23 December 2022.
