Trafford Rowing Club is hosting their annual ‘Head of the Bridgewater’ race on the canal on Saturday 18th February.
The annual race brings out many spectators along the Bridgewater Canal Tow Path who enjoy the occasion.
Across the day from 9:30 to 3pm there will be visiting clubs from all across the UK who will be racing the course from Altrincham to Walton Park in Sale.
In total there will be approaching 200 boats with over 500 athletes to see who is the quickest across the 3.1km course (the current record for the event is just over 10 minutes). The race also has a shorter course for less experienced rowers across a 1km marked straight starting at Timperley Bridge.
The event is able to run with help from Bridgewater Canal Company which closes the canal to navigation especially for the event, the Sea Cadets who are helping marshal the event, the Scouts assisting with the use of the Scout Hut in Walton Park for race control and Trafford Council / Walton Park Sports Centre tenants for working with us to use Walton Park for the day.
Graham Whistance, Chairman at Trafford Rowing Club said “we are looking forward to welcoming all the athletes to Trafford in what will be our largest ever running of this event. Most rowing events are on wide rivers but the Bridgewater Canal with the towpath running alongside the course will give local residents the ability to be right alongside the action. You can watch the crews anywhere along the course, with the finishing line being close to Walton Park. It’s a great day out for the family and you can watch and enjoy the best cakes and BBQ on the rowing circuit.”
