Whilst many are aware Trafford Council are determined to build the Carrington Relief Road they forget one route that would be cost effective, and would ease pollution fears.

The abandoned rail route that goes through Partington needs to be reopened to rail and running alongside it could be a cycle path.

With Carrington getting bigger in the coming years with residents fears about the amount of HGV’s being on Manchester Road will create chaos for residents in Partington and beyond.

Freight could be transported on trains on the rail corridor that goes out to Skelton Junction in Timperley, the route could also be used for passenger trains which will be of great value to everyone.

It would take all the Carrington’s HGV’s off Manchester Road which would help ease traffic congestion and reduce pollution although not by much!

We know the relief road will be built, since no HGV’s will be on Manchester Road or on the relief road it will help normal traffic flow better.

Leaving this rail corridor to rot for more decades is unthinkable since this council is supposed to be climate change paranoid! it does not make sense if they intend to do nothing!

Having already asked Network Rail about the possibility of the rail route being used again they told us “We would be delighted to talk to interested people about what happens to the rail corridor.” this really is the time for the council to contact them and decide together what happens.

In the past the rail corridor was supposed to have been reopened using steam trains over Cadishead Viaduct and further on down the line however at the last minute the deal to bring life back to the route was shelved due to we believe legalities.

Friends of Carrington Moss Group have also suggested using the abandoned rail route again for freight, with the idea of also having regular passenger trains on the line with the possibility of a cycle path at the side makes perfect sense to us going forward, it is time now! for the council to listen to what the people of this borough want not what they think they want!

If money is used as an excuse they can use what is left over from the £18.2m Partington got from the levelling up fund after the area gets all that has been promised which we believe will be millions! along with other monies that could be found.

All that will be needed is for the rail route to first be cleared of the overgrown vegetation, and remove what is left of the old rail line and relay it all, creating a cycle path at one or both sides, a new station at Partington and just before the A56 near Trafford College.

This would also create jobs for local people, something we are sure all at Trafford Council will be very happy with, it’s a no brainer!
