With the season nearing an end Trafford MV welcomed Tyldesley to MacPherson Park on a bright and breezy day confident in the fact they had not lost a game since Christmas.

Tyldesley started well but MV were matching them in all phases. Trafford worked the ball to their right wing Sean Gachara who made good ground before feeding inside to Pat Eccles who opened the scoring for the home side.

Eccles failed to convert his own try 5-0. Both sides were battling for supremacy and another break down the right by MV see’s Eccles throw a miss pass out to centre Andrew Moore who is well tackled by his opposite number which results in a damaged shoulder for Moore as he hit’s the ground.

Sam Sherratt comes on as replacement for MV at full back with Nathan Hamilton switching to his preferred roll in the centre. The game was scrappy at times with passes going astray and a number of knock on’s keeping the referee, who was having a good game, busy.

Tyldesley come close to levelling the score as a good attack down the left see’s their winger lose the ball while crossing the line and failing to ground the ball cleanly – a let off for MV ! Trafford extend their lead as Paul Davenport draws in the defence whilst attacking in the left corner, the ball is slipped to Micah Dyos who breaks through the remnant defence.

The conversion is again missed 10-0 to TMV. Andy Quigley was leading the way in defence for MV putting in a number of good tackles, this is an area on MV’s game that has improved greatly over recent months. Tyldesley narrow the margin as they are awarded a penalty wide left which they kick 10-3 at the half time break.

Trafford MV are looking the better side and a scrum in the defending midfield results in Davenport breaking and throwing a dummy wide pass, slipping a short ball to Quigley who drives through a good desperation tackle almost scoring for the referee to disallow.

MV win good lineout ball, Tyldesley try to collapse the driving maul but MV get the ball out in time, Eccles gives a short pass to Jamie Kingdon on a good direct line to storm in under the posts, Eccles adds the extras 17-3.

Tyldesley are not fighting to stay in the game and as Joe Best kick’s out of defence for MV the ball is collected in the middle by the visiting centre who carves his way through the MV defence to score on the left and convert 17-10.

Coach Brian Collier has a stern word in his players ears behind the posts and it works! MV Launch a good attack through Kieran Edgar and Connor Monaghan, Tyldesley strangle the ball on the ground and in frustrated attempts to release the ball Davenport get’s a red card for stamping.

MV maintain their pressure and Kieran Edgar breaks from the base of a scrum and his acceleration prevents a decent tackle from the cover defence, Eccles converts 24-10.

The game is rounded off late on as MV win another good scrum ball, Eccles takes on and good drives from Jamie Kingdon and Sam Wilson put MV in a good place.

Tyldesley give away a penalty which is quickly tapped and taken by Eccles who feend Jamie Kingdon on the charge to split their centres without a tackle being made. Pat Eccles converts and the whistle blows for a bonus point 29-10 win for Trafford MV.

It is now unlikely that MV’s final game will get played as Cup Competitions start for many clubs this weekend. Trafford destiny will now likely lie in the hands of the League Secretary as final positions are decided.

Trafford MV can be pleased with getting to the position they have but can only blame themselves for the uneasy start to the season that saw the team just fall short of winning in a number of fixtures they should probably have won.

New players have now bedded in, with more to follow next season. Senior Colts players have come of age and played 1st XV rugby – more will be seen of these players in the coming seasons at TMV.

Trafford MV’s Senior Players have their end of season Awards Presentation Day this Saturday at 1.00pm in the Clubhouse. Coach Brian Collier will be patting his players on their back but will also be reminding them of what could have been and also of their potential going forward as they look to challenge for honours next season – the Clubs Centenary Season.
