The Manchester Marathon 2023 got underway with over 28,000 people taking part in the 26.2 miles event.

All the runners and wheel chair competitors must have felt a bit cold at the start as the temperatures were cooler than expected, they all though got underway and soon warmed up with the wheel chair competitors going first.

The elite men’s race was separated by two groups with large gaps to the leaders, it took a while before the others came past in Sale, by the time that happened the spectators came to enjoy the marathon, this years event was well attended.

At any running event their is always some that either get injured or have some other issue and that happened today where a woman was seen being helped on to a stretcher by ambulance staff and was in the ambulance for a while, the ambulance had to go down the A56 towards Stretford so for a moment the marathon was temporarily stopped.

A marathon is no jog in the park this is 26.2 miles and whatever nagging injury you have will become something very different in a race this long, of course no one knows what is around the corner and we hope the female runner makes a full recovery.

The marathon continued on and then rain started to fall although light it must have been a relief to some of the runners who have already got to nearly half way, despite the rain more people were coming to see the marathon and the pavements all down Washway Road towards Timperley were now crowded and no one could hardly move.

Some spectators did not like the untested way of the runners dumping the water bottles in bins, many of these bottles were thrown at spectators and fellow runners, this year One Trafford workers were on hand to pick up the bottles, many were thrown towards them as they worked with no protection!

Families were seen ducking for cover and shielding their children as they walked past the bins, fortunately at the time we were recording no one other than a runner was hit, one of the workmen agreed with our reporter that it was a stupid decision.

This Marathon though will be remembered for how many people came to cheer on the runners more so in Sale where they got the great support.
