A Sale residential care home manager is in the running for a national award in recognition of his leadership skills.

Mark Lake, registered manager at Syrian House in Ashton-on-Mersey, has been shortlisted for a Housing With Care Award. The national awards are being held for the first time this year to recognise and celebrate excellence in supported and extra care housing.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the London Marriott Hotel on Grosvenor Square on 9th June.

Mark, who has managed Syrian House since 2017 for national adult health and social care charity Making Space, hopes to take home the manager of the year award, which recognises an outstanding on-site manager who has responsibility for both the building and the care service delivered on site.

Syrian House is offers personalised 24-hour residential care to up to 17 people and is rated ‘Good’ by health and social care watchdog the CQC (Care Quality Commission).

Mark said: “It was a big surprise to be shortlisted.

“It’s nice to know Making Space is thinking about its employees and being put forward for an award like this really makes you feel appreciated. Let’s hope I can win it for the whole team here at Syrian House.”

Mark was nominated for the award by Mark Storey, a regional head of operations for Making Space in Greater Manchester.

He says: “Mark is excellent role model with a calm and knowledgeable manner that instils confidence in his teams at Syrian House and motivates them from the frontline.

“His team trusts him and he empowers them to give their best. He has excellent attention to detail and makes sure everyone knows what’s expected of them.

“He is a go-to, hands-on manager and an asset to Making Space: the perfect balance between people-focused and results-focused. He really deserves to take home this award.”
