Brave rescue team saves animals after the Kakhovka dam is blown up in Ukraine

As floodwaters resulting from the destroyed Kakhovka dam continue to rise rapidly, brave animal rescuers supported by PETA’s Global Compassion Fund are navigating murky waters and broken power lines to reach those who are in imminent danger of drowning.

The rescue teams have deployed boats to help pull frightened animals out of the water and are delivering medicine, food, drinking water, and other essential supplies to the devastated region.

“This catastrophe transcends any dramatic situation we have experienced with our local partners since the outbreak of the war,” says PETA Germany’s Sylvie Bunz, head of the “PETA Helps Ukraine” project.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, PETA Germany and partner organisations including Animal Rescue Kharkiv have helped thousands of animals in Ukraine survive famine, injuries, and other traumatic experiences. 

Spay and neuter programmes in the region are helping to combat the homeless-animal crisis, and more than 1,400 tonnes of dog and cat food has reached animals in need.
