Greater Manchester Magistrates in the Community is thrilled to announce details of its annual School Mock Trial Competition for Year 6 students.

This year’s competition will take place on Wednesday 21st June 2023 at Hemsley House, 41-42 Crescent, Salford, M5 4PE with 15 schools from across Greater Manchester battling it out to be crowned winners.

The annual competition involves the children acting out a trial in which they play all the major roles including magistrates, solicitors, defendants, and witnesses. We are also pleased to announce that, new for this year, we will also be running a sentencing exercise workshop on ‘cyberbullying’ to look at the potential consequences of a guilty sentence.

In addition to the competition, other agencies will be attending the day to talk to students about staying safe. These will include Greater Manchester Police, British Transport Police, Early Break (Health & Wellbeing Services), Travel Safe and Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service.

Mary-Liz Walker JP DL will be attending the competition as the newly appointed High Sheriff of Manchester. She said:

“I am delighted to be part of this unique competition providing students with an opportunity to work as a team, demonstrate their abilities in verbal reasoning as well as gaining valuable experience and confidence in speaking in public. These mock trials are also a wonderful and fun way to reinforce what children learn about citizenship and the importance of the rule of law.

I have previously been involved with these competitions in my capacity as a magistrate, so I know first-hand how much the children who competed then enjoyed and learned from the day. I am sure the schools participating will enjoy the competition and remember it as one of the highlights of their school year.”

Trafford schools involved are:

  • Park Road School Primary School
  • Well Green Primary School
  • Bowdon Church School
  • Moss Park Primary School
  • St Vincents Catholic Primary School
