Former Manchester United and Scotland defender Gordon McQueen has passed away aged 70.

McQueen played for United from 1978 until 1985 making 184 appearances including 20 goals for the club, the 6ft 4 Scottish giant also played for St Mirren and Leeds before joining Man United, he also had a spell at Chinese club Seiko SA before hanging up his boots.

He also played for his country making 30 appearances for Scotland.

After he hung up his boots McQueen joined Sky Sports as a pundit, he also joined Middlesborough as a scout in 2008.

Paying tribute Manchester United spokesperson on Twitter said: “Everyone at Manchester United is heartbroken by the loss of our beloved former defender Gordon McQueen, Our love and condolences are with his family at this terribly sad time.”

Alex Stepney said: “So so sad to hear that Gordon McQueen has passed away. Everyone loved the big man, a wicked sense of humor went hand in hand with the most generous spirit.What a superb man…huge love to Gordon’s family x.”

Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling said: “A lovely gentle giant of a man with an enormous heart. Gone far too soon.”

McQueen passed away from Vascular Dementia.
