Cyprus cats are dying from a feline coronavirus (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) and due to our long existing links with the country the virus could end up here in the UK.

The virus only affects cats and not humans, the virus is transmitted through cat poop and has killed loads of cats in Cyprus.

According to vets in the UK though many cats who get the infection will recover with a handful going on to die due to new medications and prompt action by the owner.

The signs to look out for if your cat has caught Feline Coronavirus are:

  • Lethargy
  • Weight Loss
  • Suffering from a fever
  • Appearing to be unwell

Some cats will have breathing issues and it is important to get them to a vet as soon as possible to avoid complications and the death of your pet.

It seems because Cyprus has a huge feral cat population this is where many of the hundreds of cats have sadly died since they will not have anyone taking them to get treated.

We can say from what we believe Feline Coronavirus is not currently in the UK still the same owners should keep an eye out for symptoms.

Cat protection and charity centres are monitoring the situation.
