Greater Manchester Police are working closely with Manchester Caribbean Carnival organisers and security staff to prevent violence and ensure a safe and enjoyable community event.

At approximately 1:30pm today (12 Aug), a 17-year-old boy was arrested on Claremont Road for possession of an offensive weapon, assault of an emergency worker and possession of a class B drug.

Nearby Alexandra Park, at around 3:30pm, a 31-year-old man was arrested for possessing multiple offensive weapons and a class B drug.

Superintendent Arif Nawaz said: “Every arrest made and knife seized is a fantastic result as it means one more weapon is taken off the streets of Greater Manchester.

“Officers out on patrol are committed to making Caribbean Carnival a safe event for the community – violence and criminal activity won’t be tolerated.

“As part of our policing plans, officers from GMP’s Operation Venture with unique expertise in detecting, deterring, and responding to serious violence are deployed in the event site and surrounding areas.

“Anyone who carries a knife is a danger to themselves and others and I hope these arrests serve as a deterrent to carrying knives. If you suspect someone is carrying a knife, we urge you to contact GMP via www.gmp.police.uk or 101.

Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Crimestoppers also have a dedicated website which enables those aged 11 to 17 to pass on information anonymously – this can be accessed through www.fearless.org In an emergency, always dial 999.”
