Some mobile phone handsets will stop working as the networks start to switch of 3G in Trafford.
We have seen via coverage maps Vodafone in the next few months will switch off 3G in all parts of the borough, Three-UK who are likely to be linked with Vodafone soon will also see 3G switched off.
It is not certain yet when O2 are to switch of the 3G signal however they have to do so along with EE by the end of January 2024.
The reasons for the shut down of the 3G signal is to boost 5G services taking the frequency to a scary 40GHz mostly via millimetre wave (small cells) a completely untested technology.
Some older phones will stop working once the 3G signal is switched off, those very old Nokia handsets and others that used 2G and 3G will only work on 2G, all handsets up to the very latest flagship iPhone or Samsung will work as normal although if you are in an area where 4G or 5G signal is weak your signal will end up on 2G or Edge (E) which means you can only call or text.
In the coming years once 6G is operational it might be 4G will be switched off to give more spectrum to the 6G frequency which of course will be even faster than 5G and in them days ahead we question what this all means for home broadband which will be deemed slower than a slug on steroids.
