In good conditions for playing rugby Trafford MV welcomed New Brighton to MacPherson Park intent on defending their league leadership.

With 2 wins under their belt and maximum points earned MV are confident although not fully got their form back from last seasons good finish.
This intent was shown early on as MV opened in first couple of minutes with a try from centre Jamie Kingdon who was too strong for the defence to score under the posts. Fly Half Patrick Eccles converted easily for a 7 – 0 lead. New Brighton didn’t sit back and came back with penalty in front of posts kicked comfortably 7-3.
Both teams were having periods of good play with the Wirral sides big forwards taking the MV pack on and Trafford striving to get ball to use out wide. MV soaked up the pressure and then good hands led to a break down left.
Winger Josh Salmon used his pace to get behind the defence and touch down behind the posts, Converted again by Pat Eccles 14 – 3 to the home side.
The referee was managing the game well and both sides were playing good competitive rugby. The visitors came back into the game when their centre strolled through some weak MV defence to score, the conversion making it 14-10.
As half time loomed it was Traffords 2nd row Micah Dyos making his mark by crossing the line to the left of the posts. The missed conversion left Trafford MV with a 19 – 10 lead as the teams took their break.
Trafford were not playing their best and although looking better in many phases of the game they seemed to lack decision making and often took the ball back into the forwards when pace out wide was begging to be used.
A catch and drive put New Brighton over the line , however the conversion was missed 19 – 15 and a tight finish on the cards. The shock of the game then came as the visitors scored again to sneak into the lead 19-20.
All was not lost however as newcomer scrum half Jamie Parker grabbed the lead back for MV with a late try down the left touchline, too wide for Eccles to convert but enough for Trafford MV to notch up their 3rd league win of the season.
Trafford retained the leadership of the league level on points with Sefton but with a better points scored difference.
This weekend Trafford will again be fielding 3 senior sides with the 1st XV heading to De La Salle RFC in Salford for what is always a tough game. MV will need to put in a strong shift if they are to bring the points home and must be more decisive in executing the set plays they call.
Head Coach Brian Collier will be dishing out strong words to get his team back up to top form at the earliest opportunity.
