With almost one in four teenage girls estimated to have a probable mental health condition, a children’s psychology service will host a free webinar for adults on addressing and understanding this anxiety.

On Thursday, a number of mental health professionals from bMindful, based in Cheadle, will be on hand to provide valuable insights for parents, teachers and other children’s services professionals.

The interactive session will explore some of the factors impacting teenage girls’ mental health from academic stress to social media and societal pressures, equipping adults with the tools they need to better support the girls in their lives.

report from The Health Foundation found that ‘mental health conditions have become more common among children and young people’, and that ‘almost one in four girls aged between 17 and 19 had a probable mental health condition in 2021, almost doubling from about one in seven in 2017’.

Yet despite this, mental health charity Mind found that: “Young people still don’t understand mental health well” which causes them to talk down any mental health problems they might have.

Karen Moffett, managing director at bMindful, has more than 20 years’ experience in children’s services. She said: “Our children and young people are up against huge pressure at the moment as we navigate a post-pandemic world, the cost of living crisis and all the normal struggles that come with being a teenager.

“Mental health continues to be taboo for many of us, but we hope that by making the conversation around mental health more accessible we can start to see real change in our younger population who are in desperate need of adequate mental health support which will have huge benefits on them as they begin their adult lives.

“By providing some free sessions, run by our team of clinicians, we hope to provide advice and guidance that could make a huge difference to a girl’s life.”

bMindful has developed a range of services to help children and young people, their families, teachers, and carers achieve better outcomes through therapeutic care.

Following the webinar on anxiety on Thursday, bMindful will host another webinar on neurodiversity on Thursday, 19th October. Sign up to attend the online events here.
