With Remembrance day now over for another year we remember the civilians who died in Trafford in World War 2.
According to Greater Manchester Blitz Victims Trafford had many innocent people who died when the Germans came over and dropped the bombs, you wouldn’t be too surprised to learn that Stretford came out the tops with 162 and 17 unidentified who died this was because the Luftwaffe went looking for infrastructure and found Trafford Park and of course Manchester United’s Old Trafford ground.
Here then is a list of places in Trafford where the most people died:
- Stretford – 162 and 17 unidentified
- Altrincham – 34
- Urmston – 12
- Partington – 4
- Sale – 1
On 11 March 1941 a total of 67 people died in Stretford and 8 people died in Broadheath on 25 October 1941, Old Trafford was also affected on 11 October 1941 although no deaths were submitted.
Around Manchester there were 629 people who died, in Salford 286 and 13 unidentified sadly perished along with Eccles 44 deaths, a total of 1,482 people died from the bombings in Manchester.
Whilst we will never forget those brave men and women who died for us in both world wars we have to also remember the innocent civilian souls that died and this article is for them.
