A small earthquake measuring 2.5 hit Buxton, Derbyshire tonight at around 5.30pm (2 January 2024) according to the British Geological Survey,

The epicentre was 500m south of a place called Combs Head in the High Peak district and the depth was just 3km.

At the time of publishing USGS who publishes earthquakes in real time from 2.5+ magnitude has not yet added this earthquake to the website, the EMSC (Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre) has also yet to update their maps.

Although nothing much to brag about compared to the earthquake in Japan which was recorded as 7.5 magnitude its still the biggest shaker the UK has had in the last 6 months, it could go back even further, the BGS only has data up to the beginning of June 2023.

The UK has many earthquakes though many are around 1 to 1.5 magnitude which is of no concern, however we have had much bigger earthquakes, the 6.1 magnitude earthquake in 1931 comes to mind including the Market Rasen, Lincs magnitude 5.2 at around 1am which was felt in Trafford.

And closer to home we reported on an earthquake with the epicentre in Sale with a magnitude 2.3 in 2022.
