In a Trafford Council executive meeting councillors spoke about the disused rail line that goes out from Partington east bound towards Timperley.
It was a chance to find a useful way of bringing this rail route back to life after several attempts in the past, Altrincham Green councillor Michael Welton mentioned the so called Carrington Greenway and the debate continued.
Trafford Labour councillor Liz Patel gave the nod to buses which is claimed as sustainable and cheaper, when she came to the Carrington Greenway she didn’t even know it was a live rail track so the hope she would at the very least look at the route vanished.
Other councillors thought it was sustainable however Trafford Labour councillors still rejected the rail route once more, then Lib Dems Councillor Shaun Ennis stepped up and mentioned that funding had been given and even Partington Parish Council asked about the route opening up again.
Another councillor though stepped in and said that the former MP Kate Green tried to get the route reopened as a rail route once more however failed to get the funding needed, she goes on to completely reject the reopening of the line and that was that.
We have asked Councillor Shaun Ennis for a statement and if money has been given then the route should be reopened even though Trafford Labour wanted the smoggy bus unsustainable one.
It was also cheap for the leader of the council to state that the debate was becoming a talk about trains when no one mentioned trains, having a cycle/run/walk path on that route is incredibly popular and even Sustrans are trying hard to get this route.
Its hypocritical of the council when they are supposed to be a pollution busting council, one if not the first to call a climate emergency and yet they go crazy for all these huge housing developments and warehousing which will bring with it thousands more cars, HGV’s vans which will cause more pollution.
Every year Trafford has well over 100 people die of pollution and already 8 people have died in 2024 and it’s not even February, things will get worse! so for the council to prefer buses over a healthy sustainable alternative with the nice side effect of not only boosting confidence but improving mental health is really scary.
You might think that buses will be electric, some will some won’t however having more buses through Partington or any roads in Trafford now would mean further congestion meaning more pollution.
