Over 3,000 football fans are expected to attend today’s remembrance event being held at Old Trafford.

The 6th of February 2024 marks the 66th anniversary of The Munich Air Disaster in which 23 people including 8 Manchester United players sadly died.

The aircraft carrying players, club staff and sadly a number of journalists, supporters and the flight crew crashed on take off from Munich Airport, snow was a problem and so was the runway and despite the captain of the aircraft making two attempts the last attempt proved to be fatal.

Elaine Giles and Mike Thomas from Munich58 organised the annual remembrance events at Old Trafford in partnership with Manchester United. an event has already taken place last Sunday prior to the game against West Ham and today outside the ground which will start from 2.30pm.

The event today will be held by Rev John Boyers the former chaplain of Manchester United who will present a mix of poems, songs and reflections.

Mike Thomas from Munich 58 said: “2024 marks the 66th anniversary of the crash, it is heartwarming that what started as an informal supporter gathering with only a handful of people has now become the remembrance ceremony attend by an ever increasing number of supporters.”
