A van has been crushed after it was found by council staff which was used to dump waste. The van was caught fly-tipping waste on a lay-by on Manchester Road in Carrington using covert camera equipment on four separate occasions in 2023.

Checks were made with the DVLA to find out who owned the van – but the checks found that the van was not registered to anyone.

Council officers from the Environmental Improvement team then made checks with the councils CCTV control room to see if they could locate where the vehicle was following one of the fly-tipping incidents.

The van was found on Wood Lane in Partington and seized at the start of September 2023 with officers using Environmental Protection powers.

Despite the length of time the van was in storage with no one coming forward to claim the van it was then destroyed on 22 February 2024.

Cllr Stephen Adshead, Executive Member for Highways, Environmental and Traded Services, said:

“Let this be a warning to anyone thinking of blighting our communities by dumping waste. We will use whatever powers we have available to us to stop fly-tipping in our communities.

“If we see it, our officers will not stop investigating. You can either dispose of waste properly or you can face a fine of up to £50,000, imprisonment and having your vehicle seized and crushed.

“There is no excuse.”
