A small sinkhole that appeared on 2 March 2024 on Covershaw Lane near Partington has still not been fixed and now getting much worse.

The road is still blocked off from Moss Lane/Chapel Lane in Partington and according to Google Maps won’t reopen until late June.

We checked what was going on after being sent a statement from Trafford Council highways telling us that work should be completed in 6 weeks due to the sinkhole needing more than just filling, it needs to be reconstructed due to where the sinkhole is located.

The statement issued on 29 April said:

“Covershaw Lane will remain closed due to an ongoing structural defect in the road. A sinkhole appeared on the road adjacent to a brook, most likely to the prolonged periods of heavy rainfall we have had during winter. Due to the complex nature of the damage and the need to design a repair near the brook, we estimate Covershaw Lane will remain closed for 6 weeks. Please use alternative routes including Moss Lane, Warburton Lane.”

We question why then it has taken the council 58 days from the sinkhole opening up to the time they issued the statement to do anything other than a slight bit of reshaping around the sinkhole.

At this time we can report the sinkhole has now started cracking in several places and with more rain expected it won’t be long before the sinkhole ends up in the brook or worse.

So long as we have access we will keep reporting on this until the road is finally fixed and people are no longer inconvenienced.
