Trafford Council have today 30 May issued a statement and dates about the refurbishment of Partington Sports Centre.

The work is scheduled to start on 22 July 2024 and will be shut for a long time however once done it will look unrecognisable inside and out!

However some people have given some feeback on social media about the plans although not negative towards the refurbishment residents have questioned why all this money has been spent when other things are needed in the area.

One resident said: “It needs a whole lot more than a bloody sports village ! How about proper shops and things for families and children to do .. proper transportation houses that are in desperate need of repairs … and you think a sports village is what it needs . Why not spend the money on the things that Partington actually needs ! Why not speak to the residents of Partington ask them what they need or would like instead of a bloody sports village absolute jokers I swear.”

Another resident mentioned that she would prefer a new post office than money spent on the redevelopment.

The redevelopment will see a 4 lane 20m swimming pool built, four court sports hall, a larger fitness suite, a multi functional studio, Immersive Cycle Studio, and a large spacial foyer for pool viewing and cafe with an outdoor terrace area there will also be a wet and dry change village alongside separate gender-specific wet and dry changing spaces, both with improved accessibility, and a changing places toilet.

Once completed which is expected in early 2026! the sports centre will be renamed ‘Move Partington’ in addition the sports centre will have heat pumps and solar panels, it will also have a number of electric charging points in the car park.

Once the sports centre shuts in the next few weeks people will have to use other sports centres with the nearest being Altrincham.

Trafford won £18,3m from the levelling up fund for Partington and instantly the decision was to spend it on sports although nothing much for cycling facilities which in our opinion was a lost opportunity.

Whilst we agree with residents about other things needed in the area the idea was to help residents to be inspired to get fit and feel great, you cannot do this in the current surroundings, it is a positive forward thinking project fit for the future despite our real concerns about congestion and pollution in Partington in the coming years added to that a lack of vital infrastructure to be able to cope with so many people!

Jo Cherrett is CEO of Trafford Leisure said: ““We understand the temporary closure is disruptive for our customers and have made every effort to provide our community with alternative locations for their wellbeing. However, we are excited about the future, and how this proposed new centre would bring the community of Partington and the surrounding villages, including Carrington, together as a focal point for wellness.

“The local community in and around Partington are passionate about where they live and have an overwhelming desire to see their local area thrive. Subject to being granted planning permission, when we re-open our doors, the modern, fit-for-purpose leisure venue will be an inspiring space to help people with every aspect of their wellbeing.

It will become the third site Trafford Leisure will have opened under the new brand name move, following the opening of move Urmston in 2020, and move Altrincham later this year. move Partington, with its new extension, will offer more than 2,500 square metres of sport and leisure activities to help Trafford Leisure achieve its vision of becoming the most active place in England. When move Partington opens, the facilities, services and our team of wellbeing experts can help you move more every day. Together, let’s get Trafford moving more.”
