On a beautiful late Summer afternoon Trafford MV welcomed Broughton Park to their home ground MacPherson Park for a great afternoons entertainment.

The home club was very busy with the final cricket game of the season and 3 games of rugby taking place – the touchline was full !

Following on from a convincing defeat by Didsbury Toc H a week earlier the question mark was there against Trafford MV – how would they react. The team needed to make a statement that they were here to compete in this newly promoted to league and not be anybody’s whipping boys. The statement was well made.

Trafford opened the score early doors with a good catch and drive from lineout ball deep in the visitors 22 and it was Paul Davenport that latched onto the ball driving it over the line and touching down, stand off Luke O’Shea converted 7 – 0.

It wasn’t too long before MV struck again as the ball was moved wide and a good break and lay off from Micah Dyos gave winger Jordan Rigg enough space to use his pace and race away, Luke O’Shea converted once again 14-0 to MV.

Broughton Park, well established at this level and higher, were not sitting back and Trafford were made to work hard as the visitors upped the tempo in an effort to get back into the game.

This brought them 2 tries one of which was converted 14-12. As half time approached O’Shea nudged over a penalty for TMV to go into the break with a 17-12 lead.

Trafford were looking the better of the sides firmly in control up front and coping well with defence and showing glimpses of danger in their attacks. Craig Collier struck for MV early in the half with a pick up and drive from the base of a ruck 22 -12.

Trafford kept their momentum and control of the game and it was good to see their young talent shine as Ollie Jones and Fenton Dickinson showed good ability with some neat interplay and then a kick which Dickinson picked up and outpaced the defence to score.

Broughton park came back with a converted try but it was Trafford that finished the stronger with scrum half Callum Yates getting a late score to end the game at 31-19 a home win for Trafford MV.

With 2 wins from 3 in this new league Trafford are beginning to show their ability to take teams on and indeed get the better of them. Tough games and challenges will undoubtedly come but for now Trafford MV are holding their own and picking up the points.

This coming weekend (28th) Trafford head to the coast to take on the team that were promoted alongside them last season New Brighton. With home and away wins over New Brighton last season Trafford will be in good heart going into the game but cannot afford to be over confident.

Trafford’s 2nd XV will play at home against Aldwinians kicking off at 3.00pm while the 3rd XV travel to face Bolton. On Sunday Trafford MV Ladies XV are at home to Birkenhead Park Ladies kicking off at 2.00pm.

Also on this weekend is the South Of The River Beer Festival opening at 5.00pm on Friday and Noon on Saturday. A wide selection of cask beers and ciders with music and food available. Admission is £5 on the door.
