The volunteer group ASEZ WAO, from the World Mission Society Church of God, Manchester, and Birmingham branches, gathered in efforts to restore the Butterfly Field at Reddish Vale Country Park by clearing vegetation after the field’s annual cut.
This event held even more significance for local members as they celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Church of God. Stockport Mayor Suzanne Wyatt and the Mayoress joined volunteers on the day with local Reddish councillors David Wilson and Liz Crix, together with regular volunteers and friends of the Country Park.
Countryside Officer Daryll Falconer supported the event, and volunteers were provided refreshments by The Coffee Bean Dream.
Reddish Vale Country Park is working to restore the Butterfly field and maintain it as a conservation meadow to encourage biodiversity. Before the sowing of new wildflowers, the field needed to be cut and the vegetation cleared to create the right soil conditions for new growth.
Volunteers worked enthusiastically, manually raking the field and carrying off the cut vegetation with wheelbarrows.
The Stockport Mayor thanked the volunteers, noting, “In this day and age, we need to look after our world, so what you are doing helps, thank you very much.”
The Mayoress, who spent time helping volunteers to clear the field, said that the volunteers were “absolutely amazing” for helping out with such a “worthy cause.”
A regular volunteer with ASEZ WAO highlighted the positive impact of participating in the clearing work, stating …
“Today, many volunteers, both locally and from as far as Birmingham, joined to support ASEZ WAO’s efforts to clear the Butterfly Field before its new year start. It was wonderful to meet the Mayor, who supported and encouraged us, as well as the local councillors and volunteers. We are grateful to have been able to join today.”
