Julie Hesmondhalgh will join Manchester’s low-voiced LGBTQ+ choir ‘The Sunday Boys’ for their annual Christmas concert.
Julie, best known to soap fans for playing Weatherfield’s Hayley Cropper, will join The Sunday Boys for ‘A Very Queer Christmas’, an annual concert at Manchester Cathedral, which celebrates the festive season through music and storytelling.
Alongside performances of Christmas classics including In the Bleak Midwinter, Solstice Carol, and White Christmas, Julie will perform texts written by writer and artist, Mark Croasdale.
The concert, which will celebrate the start of the winter solstice, will take audiences on a journey through a season which can be both joyful and challenging, especially for members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Julie Hesmondhalgh said, “I’m absolutely thrilled to join The Sunday Boys for what we hope will be an evening full of all the festive feels.
“The poems and texts have been chosen to reflect our many different experiences and memories of, and feelings about, this time of year.
“With the stunning setting of the iconic Manchester Cathedral and the wonderful sound of this choir, we hope it will be a really magical evening.”
As well as the evening’s performances, audiences will be able to take part in a raffle with fantastic prizes.
Michael Betteridge, Artistic Director of The Sunday Boys said, “We’re so excited to welcome Julie to our annual Christmas concert and to see how she brings these texts to life.
“This concert has been programmed to use the immense acoustics of Manchester Cathedral and let audiences experience The Sunday Boys and the incredible sound they create.
“Winter Solstice marks the darkest day of the year and this concert is our chance to celebrate through songs and stories and from this moment onwards, bid the darkness farewell.”
A Very Queer Christmas, Our Solstice Night will take place at Manchester Cathedral on Saturday 21 December. Doors will open at 6.30pm and the concert will begin at 7pm.
