Trafford Council has 35 allotment sites with over 1000 plots in the borough, due to inflation pressures the council are asking what people think about having to pay up to 33% more per year.
A consultation has today been launched to get the views of the public on the charges and fees.
The proposal means the rental charge will increase from £104 to £138.80 and £52 to £69.40 respectively, despite the huge increases people aged 60 or over will still get the half price discount.
Due to the price increases people will have to think about if having an allotment is worth having if they are trying to save money on growing their own food or if the increases means they cannot even afford it anymore.
Cllr Rose Thompson, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Communities and Safety, said:
“Allotments promote physical and mental wellbeing, and allow people to grow sustainable food sources and other plants and we want to ensure that as many people as possible are able to access them. Since we last set our fees, inflation has gone up by more than 33 per cent and that is having an impact on the service.
“Therefore, we are looking to increase the rents and we are urging as many people as possible to fill in the consultation survey as soon as possible to give their views.”
