Police were called last night (23 December) at around 8pm to reports of a serious road collision involving a van and a pedestrian close to Nisa store on Manor Avenue in Sale.

Emergency services attended the scene, and a 60-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, sadly he has since passed away.

Enquiries suggest a vehicle was travelling along Manor Avenue in the direction of Carrington Lane before the vehicle collided with a pedestrian who was crossing the road which caused the pedestrian, a 60-year-old man to sustain serious and fatal injuries.

A man in his 40s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

At the scene this evening (24 December) we spoke to people near the Nisa Store and one woman told us that the elderly man looked a bit drunk and the man driving the van was speeding.

Detective Constable Thomas Johnson from our Serious Collison Investigation Unit, said: “Firstly our thoughts are with the loved ones who have lost a family member and friend in tragic circumstances. They are currently being supported by specialist officers at this time.

“Whilst we continue to investigate, we are urging anyone who has further information that could help us to contact us directly as soon as possible and we are keen to speak to anyone who may have any footage, including dashcam, mobile phone footage from the area in the moments leading up to the collision.”
