A JeJu Air flight ‘7C-2216’ from Bangkok, Thailand to Muan International Airport in South Korea with 175 passengers and 6 flight crew crash landed on 29 December killing 179 people.
Two flight crew survived with serious injuries were pulled from the back of the wreckage, according to reports only 120 bodies have been found, sadly 5 children all under 10 have perished.
Air Traffic Control told the captain to be aware of a flock of birds in the area which it seems the aircraft hit, this might be why some eye witness reports claim they heard a bang, this would have been one of the engines exploding.
The aircraft due to land had now to do a normal go around to do some check lists and fly on the one engine which all aircraft can safely do, as the aircraft came into land on runway 19 at Muan an issue that couldn’t be rectified was the landing gear which didn’t retract, the speed of the aircraft was also way to fast for the runway length.
As the aircraft landed it slid along the runway at breakneck speed, overshot the runway and smashed into a wall which is believed to be 300 metres and blew up into a ball of flames.
Investigators have now got the flight data recorders (Black Box) and should with some other investigations find out the cause of the crash that has some people in the aviation world confused.
Everything will now be checked including the captain and first officer, what experience did they have, information will be needed as to why the captain land at such speeds and with no wheels to land on.
The US ‘NTSB’ (National Transport and Safety Board) is helping with the investigation on what was South Korea’s biggest aviation disaster.
