Police targeted off-road bikers in Partington yesterday (23 March) after being informed by residents of an ongoing issue in the area.
According to reports to police, local people have seen these bikes going at breakneck speed through Partington’s Nature Reserve and in other parts of the area, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage to farmers’ fields, including damage to council-owned paths and bridleways.
The North Neighbourhood team worked in conjunction with GMP’s motorcycle unit, and a total of 7 bikes were seized.
This will not be the only operation police will be conducting in the local area they will continue to conduct these operations until the message gets across: that riding ‘off-road bikes’ through Partington is not acceptable.
It is also illegal to ride an off-road bike in the UK. Parents could be prosecuted for ‘aiding and abetting’ or even ‘permitting’ off-road use, which could mean hefty fines and penalty points if it is proven their child was riding an off-road bike.
Riding an off-road bike on private land, you will need the permission of the landowner. Any damage to the land, if proven to be the responsibility of the off-road biker, will result in trouble.
Using the disused rail line would also be trespassing, as the entire rail corridor is owned by Network Rail.
All bikes seized will likely be destroyed at a scrapyard.
