Police are appealing for information following reports of a horse and its owner being attacked by a dog in a field in Broadheath.

The dog attack happened at around 7 pm on 2 April, and pictures seen by News4Trafford show deep cuts to the horse that will need extensive surgery; hopefully, the horse will recover.

We are not sure at this time about the welfare of the rider. Many horse riders who are thrown off a horse suffer serious and sometimes life-changing injuries.

The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 states that it is a criminal offence to allow a dog to be dangerously out of control on private or public land. This basically means that an owner of a dog must keep the dog on a lead around horses and other livestock.

If you get caught out, the penalties are fairly severe, ranging from being ordered to put the dog down, disqualified from owning a dog, being told to muzzle the dog and keep it on a lead when out in public. Worse, you could be sent to jail for 2 years and fined £5,000.
