The Trafford 10k 2025 running event has been rescheduled again due to Covershaw Lane continuing to be closed because of a small sinkhole that opened up at the beginning of March 2024.

The race was rescheduled for 17 August 2025, but with Covershaw Lane seemingly not even touched, the organisers of the race, Run North West, had to reschedule the event for March 2026.

After we submitted a FOI (Freedom of Information) request to Trafford Council, they replied that they, along with other agencies, investigated what caused the sinkhole and found lots of voids underneath the tarmac, which basically makes the road very weak and could cave in if motorists continued to use the road due to weight.

We can tell people that not much has been done during this entire time, and only as of a couple of days ago, another inspection was made. For the first time, we have seen new cracks in the tarmac; from further investigation, cracks seen on tarmac are an indication of a sinkhole opening up.

We have since spoken to political figures about the issues, and it seems Trafford has given different reasons as to why the road is still closed, which is confusing at best! Some local people have mentioned a variety of reasons, all of which are plausible.

If these new cracks do end up being an extra sinkhole, it will further prolong the agony for motorists, as this would incur extra costs, something the council would find hard to manage.

Businesses are tearing their hair out with this road being shut. With the Trafford 10k being rescheduled for 2026, they and residents will believe the road will be shut until then, which is not good enough; all this time, and nothing has been done!

We continue to warn people about this sinkhole! While it looks to be filled with stone, the immediate area has been weakened and continues to be that way. Do not drive down that way! Even if you do, it will be a wasted journey as the road is blocked off at the junction with Sinderland Lane; it’s a closed road for a reason!

For the runners of the Trafford 10k 2025, it must be very disappointing; however, they have several events to enter during the year, including the Adidas Half Marathon in October.

A Run North West spokesperson said:

We are sorry to have to announce that we are going to have to move the date of Trafford 10K from Sunday, 17th August 2025, to Sunday, 1st March 2026. All entrants have been emailed.

This is unfortunately out of our control and due to a sinkhole in the road that the council won’t be able to repair in time for the race day. The sinkhole is within the 1st kilometre, which is also the narrowest section of the course and means it would simply be impossible to go ahead on the planned date for safety reasons. We have left this decision as late as possible as we had remained hopeful that the road would be repaired in time; sadly, this is unlikely to happen.
