A road that has been closed for over a year in Partington has suddenly reopened with no notice from Trafford Council at the time of publishing.
Covershaw Lane was closed shortly after a sinkhole opened up just past Sinderland Brook. The sinkhole was small in size; the annual Trafford 10k running event went ahead; however, this year’s run was cancelled, and the rearranged date was also cancelled until next year.
As seemingly nothing was happening, residents and businesses feared that it could have been abandoned, with only a bunch of lame unproven excuses given from a freedom of information request that basically said, “We are with third parties investigating what is going on beneath the surface and found all around the sinkhole big defects that, if not fixed, may mean that part of the road could collapse.”
We can confirm that on the structural part of it, the only things that were different the entire time were that a tree was cut down and the sinkhole was cut and shaped into a huge square, with a pile of large stones thrown into it; the crash barrier behind it was taken out, and that was it!
The council had already given a stated £75k and then asked One Trafford for a cool £100k to get it fixed. Now the road is fully opened; all that was done to the road is that the workmen flattened the stones, added tarmac, and a brand new bit of barrier with some new road markings!
Whilst residents will no doubt be happy now finally getting this road back open, we are sure they will be rightly asking questions about this so-called investigation, the length of time taken when the council claimed it was not safe, and reconstruction was needed, and nothing seemingly happened, and of course, the cost.
Now the road is fully opened; we are warning road cyclists of a dip in the big gap between the road marking and barrier, which if taken at speed could cause an accident. This is not safe and needs fixing.
