Workmen have started to build a new cycling facility on Cross Lane Park in Partington which will see the old BMX track flattened and a new path created.

Once built, which shouldn’t take long, it will feature a new road-style track that will help improve children’s bike handling skills and safety while out cycling; bikes will be supplied.

The issues with the new cycling facility included how close it will be to the nearest football pitch and where the bikes will be stored. Some residents mentioned light issues from the facility, which shouldn’t be a problem.

In the application, there were concerns about footballs being kicked into the facility and hitting a child, potentially causing serious harm; this also seems to have been addressed.

The location for the new bike storage has not been deemed safe; however, the metal storage container has safety features and CCTV cameras, which is believed to have satisfied those concerned about this issue, although some still remain unconvinced and fear the bikes will still be stolen.

The facility is not that big, and despite concerns, it shouldn’t be an issue for anyone. It’s a great idea, and if it brings fun to children in a safe environment, helping them all to learn cycling skills, this will not only help them to enjoy cycling but ultimately to keep safe, which people must agree is a good thing.
