Throughout August, TfGM is running a trial to allow older and disabled TfGM concessionary pass holders to travel on buses before 9:30 am for free.

All you do is tap your pass on the bus card reader as normal and enjoy free travel 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This month-long trial does not include the tram or train.

Once the month is up, from 1 September, you will have your pass as normal from 9:30 am to midnight all week long, including bank holidays.

TfGM’s month-long trial will help them see if it’s worth lifting the restriction. Basically, the more you use your pass before 9:30 am, and any feedback on the trial could mean free travel on the bus before 9:30 am is made permanent.

Erica Woods, co-chair, GM Older People’s Equality Panel said: “We’re really excited for no more ‘twirlies’ (older people arriving ‘too early’ to use their bus pass) this August on the Bee Network.

“This is a great result for older residents, and we can’t wait to make the most of it.

“It’s often older people with financial challenges that rely on buses, and currently they can’t get to essential health appointments, meaning that treatment is delayed or they have to use taxis that they can ill afford.

“And it’s not just older people that will benefit – we’re shoppers, we’re carers, we’re volunteers. This pilot will really help us to unleash our potential.”
