Trafford Council has today announced that they are looking to appoint a construction firm to complete the refurbishment of Partington Leisure Centre.
Partington won £18.3m from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund which was announced on 19 February 2024. The council stated that it would then temporarily close the sports centre until its completion sometime in January 2026.
We are in the middle of August 2025, and they have still not appointed a construction firm to start the job. Looking deeper, the council estimates work should start at the beginning of November this year and end on 30/04/2027.
As part of the levelling up fund, work has started on a new child’s cycling facility on the former BMX track next to the skate park, and the changing rooms next to the boxing club in Cross Lane Park have been upgraded.
The council has mentioned two new astro turf (3G) pitches; however, the first pitch was installed decades ago, and the new one that sits beside it cost £1.5m, with the Football Foundation contributing the most to the project, which has been reported to be just over £800k. The council paid £200k from the Levelling Up Fund.
The refurbished changing rooms will not only give football players a better place to change and more toilets and wash facilities, but there will also be disabled facilities.
Whilst it is great that someone is coming to refurbish the sports centre and money is being allocated from the Levelling Up Fund for other things in Partington, the wait of well over a year seems to be a tad unfair. To only now try to appoint someone to do the work, with no reasons given for the delay, is not a good look for the council.
Cllr Eve Parker, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Leisure, Arts, Culture and Heritage, said:
“These are exciting times for Partington and these improvements will be a massive boost to everyone in the area. We are helping to give help residents access to sport and leisure, in line with our Council priorities.”
