According to WXCharts the weekend gets off to a stormy start as a fairly deep low pressure system comes in from the Atlantic.

A huge wave of rain, which could be intense for a time in some areas of Manchester and the North West, will soak us during the early afternoon. The winds will pick up, with predicted gusts in Manchester to be around 30 mph. The rain will last much of the afternoon, although lighter, it will stop to give a dry and clear evening.

On Sunday, it will largely be dry, although some areas could see a drop of rain for a time; the winds will not be as strong as Saturday.

Looking to next week, from predictions, a low-pressure system comes in for Wednesday evening into Thursday, which looks even worse than Saturday, with intense rain and very windy conditions likely to be in the early hours of Thursday. Temperatures will hover around the 19°C mark.

Time to get the wet weather gear back out as we head into autumn. With temperatures still reasonable for this time of year, you will want to get a breathable one, or you will end up dripping from the inside!

Lightweight breathable jackets might look very thin and put you off buying a jacket like that; however, it’s these jackets that keep you dry from the inside and dry on the outside, and they will also be more durable.

Gore-Tex is the go-to product, although it can be expensive but offers full protection from the rain and will be very breathable. Brands like North Face, Berghaus, Haglofs, and even Adidas have jackets made from Gore-Tex.

The same outdoor wear firms offer good quality jackets and other apparel without Gore-Tex; they have their own waterproof systems and are breathable. They are much cheaper than the Gore-Tex variants, although if you look around, you could find an Adidas Gore-Tex jacket much cheaper than the other brands.

The cheaper brands like Regatta, Karrimor, Trespass, and others offer great value and actually do a good job initially of keeping you dry in moderate rain for about 25/30 minutes. The issue with some of the jackets is that they are not very breathable, and the durability is questionable.

Last year, many people wore a longer jacket brand called ‘Dry Robe.’ They are great for walking the dog or having a walk to the shops, etc. The jackets, which are priced over £150, are waterproof for an extended heavy rain shower.
