“We feel neglected by the council,” says residents of one road in Urmston who have been trying to get a tree cut down or, at the very least, remove the roots that have been not only damaging the path but the curb and the road itself.
Joyce and fellow residents on Newbury Drive, very close to Trafford Retail Park in Urmston, have had enough and want the council to listen to them.
When we arrived to see the state of the road and the pavement, it was in a shocking state. We spoke to other neighbors, and all have said the tree should be chopped down. They are concerned about the tree and how much damage it is doing underneath them all.
The immediate area is not in a Conservation Area, and no trees are protected, including the one they want removing.
Joyce showed us documents proving how much contact she has had with both MP Andrew Western and Trafford Council. Her neighbor came out to have a talk and was concerned more about the damage the roots are causing and the trip hazard on the pavement; he is also concerned that the tree could fall down.
So far as we are aware, Trafford has responded a few times by sending out workmen to look at the tree, and all that has currently been done was branches have been cut back. Nothing was done about the path or the curb, which is in a bad state.
We gave Joyce a contact email and number for a local Trafford Labour councillor who hopefully will address the issues once and for all.
Reading letters that MP Andrew Western has sent to Joyce clearly shows the year this road will be looked at will be 2027/28, which is not of any help to these very concerned residents. We have been told people have tripped on the pavement. Due to the fears and injuries, surely Trafford Council can resolve this situation as a priority.
The council has a duty of care for all residents to fix dodgy paths and keep public land safe; they will use a risk-based approach to identify which path or road is in need of maintenance first. Residents will see this as a serious risk to people and property.
