Average-speed cameras are being installed by TFGM along Washway Road and all the way to Stretford from 22 October 2025.

The ANPR cameras will detect anything over the current speed limit, and those that break it will receive a letter through the post soon after. According to Trafford Council, you will be fined £100 and receive 3 points on your licence!

The speed limit on the A56 changes at certain points; these changes have caught out many people due to the lack of communication from the council.

According to Trafford Council, “New average speed cameras at carefully chosen points will monitor how long it takes a vehicle to travel between two set points on a road using automatic number plate recognition.”

The cameras will be installed on poles at these locations:

  • Washway Road, Sale – In between Granery Way and Beechfield Close
  • Selsey Avenue, Sale
  • Raglan Road, Sale
  • Stanley Mount, Sale
  • Roebuck Lane
  • Cross Street, Sale near Mersey Road
  • Chester Road, Stretford both sides near Herbert Street
  • Chester Road, Stretford both sides near Victoria Park Jnr School
  • Chester Road, Stretford near Portland Road
  • Chester Road, Stretford near Wesley Street

We asked drivers about these cameras, and all said similar things such as, “Why do we need more cameras since TFGM and the council have already installed cameras on every junction?” Others said, “It’s just a money grab.”

As with the government, the council will find a problem and provide a solution; however, that solution is never a solution but something that will either affect your wallet or give you a criminal record! The council has used ‘Safety’; this is correct—having safer roads is what we all want. Just does it need so many cameras? Along with GMP’s ANPR cameras and cars.

ANPR, whilst used only for a vehicle’s number plate, can also pick up people’s faces and is subject to GDPR. If they intend to share data with a third party, they need to ensure it’s lawful and that a data sharing agreement is in place.

They need to have appropriate retention periods in place for the personal data collected and stored through the ANPR system.

There is a camera on top of 18m black poles at junctions at Eastway, Sale, Manchester Road JNC with Park Road, Timperley, and at other junctions. The tall poles have no identification on them, so we cannot say if they are TFGM equipment, but they are cameras!

Trafford seems to have the most cameras of any area, and it just gets worse as we head towards a planned smart city where surveillance is key to the plans! To further control of the population under the disguise of something they will call ‘Safety’.
