TFGM (Transport for Greater Manchester) have installed multiple ‘Average Speed’ ANPR cameras along the A56 in Sale and Stretford. We expect this to expand on all bigger roads in the borough.

The speed limit on Washway Road is 30 mph to 40 MPH, The cameras will catch you out better now even if you go just slightly over the speed limit, meaning a fine of £100.

Images from the cameras will be sent to GMP (Greater Manchester Police), and a letter will be sent asking you to pay up.

To avoid getting caught out, it would be best to just keep to 30 mph or slightly less at any point on the A56 and elsewhere. We believe the Waze app also provides speed camera locations.

So far, we have seen cameras opposite Selsey Avenue, on both sides at Stanley Mount, Roebuck Lane, and one further up at Sibson Road and Chapel Road We are continuing to look for more and will update the list once known.

These cameras ensure road safety for all users; however, many people will be concerned about the amount of cameras being installed in the borough. Police already have ANPR cameras and, of course, have vehicles with number plate recognition installed. TFGM has sophisticated cameras installed on Manor Avenue and on Manchester Road.

Most drivers will have seen the 18-metre black monopoles on several junctions on the A56. We got our photographer to get a close-up of the ball-shaped object at the top, and the photo shows two cameras, but there is one more facing Park Road, Timperley.

At the time of publishing, we cannot confirm who these cameras belong to, although we believe these are also TFGM equipment.
