New NHS data reveals that 15% of people in Trafford who wanted to quit smoking have managed to ditch the habit

According to new data released by Haypp, 15% of smokers in Trafford, who set a quit date, have successfully quit smoking.* Looking at the gender split, the percentage of successful male quitters is 14% compared to slightly more for females at 18%.

The online data, view England quit smoking rates here, displays all of the areas around England based on the most recent success rate for quitting smoking, as well as government expenditure and the success rate of various cessation tools.

In terms of funding, the total expenditure on stop smoking services for Trafford was £241,929. This figure shows how much governmental expenditure was spent in Trafford on quit smoking campaigns and services, equating to an average cost of £2,050 per successful quitter.

Quitting smoking strategies vary across the councils, but one highly successful method is encouraging smokers to switch to other nicotine products. In England, 52% of people successfully quit using NRTs e.g. non-tobacco nicotine pouches, and 56% successfully quit using tobacco-free nicotine vapes.

The top performing authorities, based on the percentage of successful quitters, are Wakefield (77%), North East Lincolnshire (76%), Wokingham (76%), Redcar and Cleveland (74%), and Warrington (74%).

Markus Lindblad, from Haypp, said: “The national harm reduction strategy, including switching to alternatives, has been key to the UK being one of the most successful countries in Europe in reducing the number of smokers overall. There are several other possible contributing factors to these success rates, including local councils offering nicotine replacement therapy, free vape starter kits, online courses, and in-person, one-to-one, or group support. All of these methods are excellent resources to help people quit smoking.

“If you’re looking to quit the habit for good, but you think a complete stop is unrealistic, then why not try ‘Swaptober’ and swap your cigarettes for alternatives, such as nicotine pouches. Not only are they smoke-free and discreet in comparison to cigarettes, but they are also much cheaper, meaning you’ll still be able to save money whilst leaving the harmful cigarettes behind!”
