A recent poll of 2,000 adults found that 34% of people feel too embarrassed to ask for help when they’re struggling with their energy bills, with 35% avoiding seeking support due to the belief they won’t qualify for assistance.
The British Gas Energy Trust runs two support funds to help as many households as possible struggling with energy debt. The Energy Support Fund (ESF) helps British Gas customers, offering grants of up to £2,000 to clear energy debt.
ESF works alongside the Trust’s Individuals and Families Fund (I&F), which is open to customers of any energy supplier. If your supplier doesn’t have its own hardship scheme, or you’ve already applied and been turned down, I&F could provide a grant of up to £1,700 to help you get back on track.
Both funds are open to people living in England, Scotland, or Wales who are facing genuine financial difficulty. To apply, you’ll need to show that you’ve received money advice within the past six months, and that the energy account is active, in your name, and linked to your main home.
One grant recipient said, “I had a grant approved today to clear my energy debt, and I can’t really put into words how grateful I am for this kind of support. Financial difficulties have had a big effect on my mental health in the last few years, and it feels like a huge weight has been lifted.”
The process is straightforward, and the support can make a real difference. Last year, over 7,700 people benefited, clearing energy debts and finding breathing space to focus on other essentials. To check eligibility criteria and apply, please visit British Gas Energy Trust – Grants Available
