Trafford MV’s plight at the foot of the Lancs/Cheshire ADM 1 continued with a hefty defeat at the hands of third placed Warrington, who proved much too strong for TMV on the day.
MV can take some solace from the young talent that is being brought into the side on a permanent basis, giving them the experience they will need going forward.
Trafford really needed an early foothold and some time with the ball in hand to establish themselves, but the home side, Warrington, was not going to allow this.
Within a couple of minutes of the opening whistle, Trafford was penalized for offside in front of their own posts, and a tap penalty saw the home attack plow through a flimsy Trafford defense; the conversion made it 7-0.
Warrington proved to be a good all-round team, running and passing well, and maintaining a tough defense when needed. The good hands brought the next score as the ball moved right to left across the backs for the wing to score, converted at 14-0. Soon afterwards, slick hands left to right across the home back line brought a converted try, making it 21-0.
It was one-way traffic, and two more converted tries were run in for a 35-0 lead. Trafford rallied for 10 minutes leading up to half-time as the home side was pinned on their own line, being forced to concede two yellow cards while defending desperately, but TMV could not force their way over.
Trafford opened the second half with promise as inside center Luke O’Shea chipped over the defense and caught and scored under the posts for Aaron Booth to convert, bringing the score to 35-7. Spirits were not high for long, as Warrington regained the momentum and scored a further four tries, converting two, for an emphatic 59-7 deserved win.
Player of the match for Trafford MV was young debutant Lewis Owen, who showed good pace, a healthy attitude to defense, and plenty of potential in what was a one-sided game. Trafford needs to rally now before yet another away game at Wigan this coming weekend.
A more even contest is anticipated, with Wigan just three places higher up the table – will Trafford be able to turn the tide this side of Christmas?
